Portfolio

The portfolio is the most important thing you will hand in for the course. I will provide a template that will guide you through the process of submitting these materials. When you submit the portfolio, your submission will take the form of an email with three attachments: the completed portfolio template and the final versions of each of your two papers. The portfolio will include the following elements:

  1. A retrospective statement addressing some of these questions: looking over your writing from the beginning of the term to the end, what thoughts occur to you? What improvement do you see? What do you feel you will continue to work on in your years at Grinnell? What problems did you address in preparing the portfolio? What insights pleased you most? Were you particularly happy with the way a given paper progressed? How did you struggle? How did working with your classmates affect your papers? Feel free to mention anything that comes to mind about your experience working with your own writing this term. This does not need to be longer than one double-spaced page, though you can write more if you feel so inspired.

  2. The final versions of your portfolio papers: the two papers themselves should total at least 3,000 words. Portfolio papers should use Chicago NB (Notes and Bibliography) style for documentation. Please highlight the changes you have made in revision or otherwise mark them so I can easily see exactly how the new version differs from the previous one. (Do not describe your revisions in general terms; make the changes clearly visible on the page.)

  3. Bibliography in Chicago NB style: provide one bibliography for the entire portfolio. To check the formatting, use my quick guide (PDF) or, for more detail, the Purdue Online Writing Lab's page on Chicago style.

  4. Annotated bibliography entries (separate from the bibliography): follow the instructions for the annotated bibliography assignment, which include a sample entry.

  5. A word count: so that I don't have to try to estimate word counts, please use the counting function in your word processor to provide a list of each paper's word count and the total for the portfolio papers.
