Point 26: Prepositional Phrases

Prepositional phrases, pleasant enough on their own, become unruly in groups. Do not allow them to gang up on you. Strings of prepositional phrases force your reader to organize many nouns at once without the guidance of strong verbs. Strong verbs organize nouns logically, making them easier to follow. Joseph M. Williams gives us this example:

Prepositional phrases: "An evaluation of the program by us will encourage increases in efficiency in the servicing of clients."

Strong verbs: "We will evaluate the program so that we can serve our clients more efficiently."
