Print.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annotation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting with a summary and deconstruction of the interaction between Bloom and Gerty MacDowell, and moving through analyses of Bloom\u2019s relationship with Molly, Bloom\u2019s masturbation and Gerty\u2019s turgid, sentimental rhetoric, Stanley Sultan concludes that \u201cNausicaa\u201d is representative of Bloom\u2019s spiritual self-defeat and destruction in the wake of Molly\u2019s affair with Boylan (168). Sultan first analyzes Bloom\u2019s character and emotional state at the outset of \u201cNausicaa\u201d, juxtaposing Bloom\u2019s \u201cundiminished ardor for Molly\u201d with the knowledge of Molly\u2019s affair (169); he concludes Bloom is passive, impotent, and reliant on masturbation as escape from his own impotence. Gerty MacDowell, Sultan argues, is no better: in fact she\u2019s worse, brainwashed by syrupy novelettes into an escapist sentimentalism so fundamentally hypocritical it turns \u201cblack into white\u201d (173).<\/p>\n<p>Sultan moves to a broader social context by comparing \u201cNausicaa\u201d to a popular novel he posits Joyce was directly parodying, <em>The Lamplighter<\/em>. Gerty, in this context, becomes \u201cthe ultimate popular development of Flaubert\u2019s Emma Bovary, the product of the degeneration of romantic idealism into sentimental wish-fulfillment and self-delusion\u201d (174).
