Having read the portion of Ulysses <\/em>I had, I expected the word \u201cbar\u201d to have more of a correlation with its modern use, as a synonym to tavern of pub. Instead, it has taken a hefty amount of digging to find a definition fitting this modern usage. Instead, the most frequent definition seems to be closer to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. A piece of any material long in proportion to its thickness or width.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    * Of shape only.<\/p>\n

    However, the most relevant usage seems to me could be \u201cbar\u201d used in terms of currency, as follows: \u201cc. A pound; esp. in half a bar, ten shillings. slang.\u201d<\/p>\n

    The rest are as follows:<\/p>\n

    1. An ornamental transverse band on a girdle, saddle, etc.;\u00a0subseq.<\/em>an ornamental boss of any shape. Also, a girdle or band.\u00a0Obs.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \u00a0b.<\/strong>\u00a0A small slip of silver fixed transversely below the clasp of a medal, as an additional mark of distinction.<\/h3>\n

      1. A straight strip or stripe, narrow in proportion to its length, a broad line; e.g. of colour. stars and bars:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
