While there were three primary categories of the type of word “blind” can be (noun, adjective\/adverb, and verb), what surprised me was how many sub-definitions there were for each category. In my initial thinking on exploring\u00a0the word blind I thought it could be interesting due to its various forms, but there are actually many more than I could’ve anticipated. The following is just a subset of the multitude of definitions there are.<\/p>\n

Noun<\/span>:<\/p>\n

“1.<\/span> Anything which obstructs the light or sight.”<\/p>\n

2.<\/span> spec.<\/em> A screen for a window, made of woven material mounted on a roller, of wire gauze, etc.; used to prevent the entrance of too much light, or to keep people from seeing in.<\/p>\n

3.<\/span> A blinker for a horse<\/p>\n

4.<\/span> Fortification<\/em>. A blindage.<\/p>\n

5.<\/span> Any means or place of concealment. spec.<\/em> a hiding-place in which a hunter conceals himself from the game. (U.S.<\/em>).<\/p>\n

6.<\/span> fig.<\/em> Any thing or action intended to conceal one’s real design; a pretence, a pretext. spec.<\/em><\/p>\n

7.<\/span> Naut.<\/em> A spritsail \u00a0[= Dutch blinde<\/em>] . Obs.<\/em><\/p>\n

8.<\/span> In Poker, a stake put up by a player before seeing his cards (see quots.); cf. Also attrib.<\/em> in blind-money<\/span>.<\/p>\n

9.<\/span> A blind baggage car on a train.\u00a0U.S.<\/em><\/p>\n

10.<\/span> A drunken bout or orgy; a binge.<\/p>\n

Adjective\/Adverb<\/span>:<\/p>\n

I.<\/span> Literal<\/p>\n

1.<\/span>\u00a0a)<\/span>\u00a0Destitute of the sense of sight, whether by natural defect or by deprivation. In comparisons, as blind as a bat or \u2020<\/span>brickbat<\/span>; also blind as a beetle<\/span>, blind mole<\/span>, blind stone<\/span> (see the ns.); to turn a blind eye<\/em>:<\/p>\n

b.<\/span> Temporarily deprived of sight, as when dazzled with a bright light.<\/p>\n

c.<\/span> Used punningly of a needle: Eyeless.<\/p>\n

d.<\/span> absol.<\/em> A blind person, esp. as pl.<\/em> Those who are blind, as a section of the community.<\/strong><\/p>\n

h.<\/span> In Poker, to go blind<\/span>: to put up a blind; hence to go (a specified stake<\/span>) blind<\/span>. Hence applied to forms of Poker in which this is done; so blind hand<\/span>.<\/p>\n

i.<\/span> to go it blind<\/span>: to act without previous investigation of the circumstances; to plunge without regard to the risks involved.<\/p>\n

II.<\/strong><\/span> fig.<\/em> Without perception.<\/p>\n

2. a)<\/span>\u00a0Of persons, their faculties, etc.; also transf.<\/em> of things: Lacking in mental perception, discernment, or foresight; destitute of intellectual, moral, or spiritual light.<\/p>\n
