Some dealt with &#8220;watching&#8221; or &#8220;observing&#8221; and others might have dealt with more &#8220;nauticle-like&#8221; references:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe state of wakefulness\u00a0<em>esp.<\/em>\u00a0during normal hours of sleep.\u00a0<em>Obs.<\/em>\u00a0exc. in\u00a0<strong><em>sleep and (or) wake<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><em>wake and dream<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAbstinence from sleep, watching, practised as a religious observance: often coupled with <em>fasting<\/em>. Also, an instance of this; a night spent in devout watching (on the eve of a festival, of the reception of knighthood, etc.); a watch, vigil.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe watching (<em>esp.<\/em>\u00a0by night) of relatives and friends beside the body of a dead person from death to burial, or during a part of that time; the drinking, feasting, and other observances incidental to this. Now chiefly\u00a0<em>Anglo-Irish<\/em>\u00a0or with reference to Irish custom. Also applied to similar funeral customs in other times or among non-Christian peoples\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cUsed by Hogg for: A serenade, nocturnal song.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWith unfavourable implication: To sit up late for pleasure or revelry; to turn night into day\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTo be active, alert, stirring, vigilant.\u00a0<em>Const<\/em>. as above; also, to be diligent, exert oneself\u00a0<em>to<\/em>(do something).\u00a0<strong><em>to wake over<\/em><\/strong>, to occupy one&#8217;s mind with.\u00a0<em>Obs.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u201cPhrases.\u00a0<strong><em>to fetch (get, get into, have) the wake of<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(a pursued vessel): to get so close to her as to be able to see, and steer by, her wake.\u00a0<strong><em>to stay a weather of a wake<\/em><\/strong>:\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe disturbance caused by a body swimming, or moved, in water\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<em>Naut.<\/em>\u00a0or quasi-nautical.\u00a0<strong><em>in the wake of (a vessel)<\/em><\/strong>;\u00a0<strong><em>in her (its) wake<\/em><\/strong>, etc.: immediately behind, and (properly) in the actual track made by, a vessel; immediately backward and along the track made.
