Given that both Stephen and Bloom grapple with loss in the first two sections of Ulysses <\/em>(Stephen the death of his mother, Bloom the suicide of his father and the death of his infant son), I am proposing \u201cmourning\u201d as a new lexicon entry along with its homophone \u201cmorning.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a quick search of the online text of Ulysses<\/em>, I see that \u201cmourning\u201d appears 26 times, and alternative derivatives (\u201cmourn,\u201d \u201cmourned,\u201d etc.) appear 44 times. The word gains prominence beginning in episode six with the narration of Patty Dignam\u2019s funeral, and I notice that the word is subsequently used to describe individuals \u201cin mourning\u201d as well as objects typically associated with mourning, like a \u201cmourning carriage\u201d and a \u201cmourning hat.\u201d Given the pervasive presence of loss that we\u2019ve already seen in Ulysses, <\/em>and the contrast that exists between appearing mournful and actually mourning (Bloom dresses in black to give the appearance of mourning Dignam\u2019s death, but we speculated in class that his thoughts during the funeral indicate that he may not actually be grieving), I think it would be useful to track this term\u2019s presence for the rest of the novel and see how it helps clarify Bloom and Stephen\u2019s relationships with loss.<\/p>\n

Since my obsession is narration and storytelling, I have also been keeping track of how time is marked throughout the novel. \u201cMorning,\u201d a classic indicator of a new day, appears much more frequently than \u201cmourning,\u201d at 121 times. The novel begins in the \u201cmorning,\u201d with Buck Mulligan standing in the \u201cmild morning air.\u201d While I\u2019m not sure yet if there is a clear correlation between \u201cmourning\u201d and \u201cmorning,\u201d it certainly seems that a lot of Ulysses\u2019 <\/em>action takes place in the morning, and I am curious if there is any connection between the two.<\/p>\n

Before settling on \u201cmourning\u201d and \u201cmorning,\u201d I was also interested in \u201cbody\u201d because it has so many potential meanings (human body, body of water, body of Christ). I\u2019m hoping to be able to look more into this word later on as we read more about religion and Bloom\u2019s perceptions of his own body.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
