I’m very intrigued by Katherine Mullin’s reference to the “Reader Critic” columns in\u00a0The Little Review,\u00a0<\/em>which “allowed a space for readers and editors to argue with each other”(381). This seems somewhat at odds with the publication’s half tongue-in-cheek declaration that it will make “NO COMPROMISE WITH THE PUBLIC TASTE” – just like the popular advertisements running on the back cover. I want to know, in particular, if readers and editors ever got into any argument over Joyce’s work – with the controversy that surrounded\u00a0Ulysses\u00a0<\/em>and its supposed obscenity, I can easily see why someone might be inspired to write in, either to support or condemn it. The fact that Mullin doesn’t mention it, though, makes me worry that perhaps they didn’t – I suppose there were plenty other stories for them to argue over – in which case I would still like to see these columns, in order to get a better understanding of what Mullin seems to characterize as a very peculiar attitude towards public culture.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
